Why Miley Cyrus’s Song Flowers Is The Ultimate Bad Bitch Anthem

BY MAHI KUMAR

This Valentines’ Day - Miley is showing us all why we should be done being a saddie, and focus on being a baddie with the new “Flowers” drop.

If you haven’t watched the video for Flowers, where have you been?!

On 13 January 2023 (we’ll come back to why that date is of significance later), Miley dropped the official song and video for “Flowers”, a single from her new album Endless Summer Vacation intending to drop in March.

The song has been trending number 1 since the very moment it dropped, and not without good cause.

Now, I’m not a die-hard Miley fan. Don’t get me wrong, I loved Hannah Montana (who didn’t?!) and knew all of those songs by heart. Similarly, songs like “Party In The USA” and “Malibu” were iconic feel good sing-along songs that everyone just knows. Let’s also not forget about when she was in her hip-hop era and turned things up with songs like “23.” And who could deny her the success on “Wrecking Ball” either? Miley has truly done it all. From being a child star, to her more controversial era, poking her tongue out and trying to twerk at all times, to going into more of a country/rock and pop era - she has evolved throughout her career. I undeniably think “Flowers” is one of her best songs despite not being an avid listener of Miley tracks.

First and foremost, Miley has found her genre. Her voice is raspy, and inexplicably suits the disco-pop-esque tone of the song. It’s upbeat, it’s fast and it’s catchy.

Beyond that though, Miley appears to be basking in the glory of self-renewal. The initial lines start off with lyrics like “we were right…till we weren’t”... but this is not a heartbreak sad girl song. Miley switches the trajectory by making the song focus on the self-love aspect of a break up. It’s about self-care, self-esteem, self-validation and nurturing yourself above all.

Flowers is the ultimate bad bitch anthem and the perfect start to 2023 because it is the epitome of finally feeling like you’re doing just fine on your own after suffering a gut-wrenching heartbreak.

The lines of the chorus, along with the pace switch up to a suddenly fast tempo, as Miley marches up the Hollywood Hills in a gold dress just feels like an ultimate badass moment:

Started to cry but then remembered I…
I can buy myself flowers
Write my name in the sand
Talk to myself for hours
Say things you don’t understand
I can take myself dancing
And I can hold my own hand
Yeah I can love me better than you can...

From the gold dress hiking up the hills, to the workout montage, to Miley dancing around in a suit (she’s giving Wednesday Addams), she looks like a total bad ass.

Flowers is the ultimate bad bitch anthem and the perfect start to 2023 because it is the epitome of finally feeling like you’re doing just fine on your own after suffering a gut-wrenching heartbreak.

Miley’s lyrics show an evolution from thinking about fond memories to deciding that it’s not worth spending a single moment longer on and so she commits to moving on by loving herself first and foremost.

Lyrics and great messaging aside though… This song has garnered attention for so many more reasons. It’s the ultimate goodbye and good riddance to her ex-husband Liam Hemsworth who is the object of the song’s lyrics and video.

Why? She’s calling out her ex, in the most sassy and classy way we know how.

While there’s so many more rumoured facts about the video and song (i.e., Miley wearing a similar golden dress to Jennifer Lawrence where she was in an interview with Liam Hemsworth, or that her suit she wears during her dancing scene actually belonging to Liam) upon some research, these have neither been proven nor denied.

But what do we know?

Firstly, the video was released on January 13. Liam’s birthday. Ouch. Bet he didn’t expect that when he woke up that morning.

Secondly, at their wedding, Liam dedicated Bruno Mars’ “When I was Your Man” to Miley. The lyrics are famously known as “I should’ve bought you flowers and held your hand. Should’ve gave you all my hours when I had the chance, take you to every party ’cause all you wanted to do was dance” have been flipped in Miley’s chorus to really hone in on her era of self love. She sure as hell does not need a man to take her dancing.

Thirdly, the house the video is shot in is allegedly a house that Liam had used for his rendezvous with his multiple mistresses (...allegedly 14 of them!) during the course of their marriage.

So remember with Valentines’ Day around the corner - whenever you’re feeling sad about a boy over whom no tears are truly worth, I urge you to blast “Flowers” and do your craziest dance, because you are MORE than enough.
