Halloween Costume Inspo For The Girlies
BY MAHI KUMAR
Whether you want to make a bespoke character reference, or are simply looking for costume inspo that’s on point for 2023; look no further!
23 October 2023
As Cady said in Mean Girls: “In girl world, there’s two types of girls on Halloween”. Girls who like to take the opportunity to dress hot, and girls who like to take the opportunity to dress funny. I can’t find that to be more accurate.
Now, me? I’ve always been a fan of dressing hot rather than spooky. Halloween is a holiday like no other, a true cause to get creative and dress outside the realms of your ordinary outfit choices.
The ancient history of Halloween is derived from the celtic belief that on the night of October 31, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. This, overtime, evolved into the time allocated to the liturgical year dedicated to remembering the dead (including saints and martyrs). In 2023, however, the options of what you can dress up as are truly endless. We often use Halloween as an excuse to dress up and party; it’s a night to bring some of our favourite memes, pop culture moments, movie and video game characters or music videos to life.
With Halloween parties, the opportunities are truly endless. One of my best friends would dress up as Gru from Despicable Me, while I went for the cute minion. Although I’ve been guilty of being a slutty angel in the past, I like to also get fucking creative and kind of niche. One year, I did Kitana from Mortal Kombat (if you know who that is, then props to you girly pop!), and last year I dressed up as Shego from Kim Possible (because she truly is the baddest baddie I’ve seen!).
So while you can dress as something ghoulish and scary, I tend to sway toward the characters and iconic moments. If you’re looking for inspo, look no further chums.
Barbie took 2023 by storm. The marketing, the collaborations, the product placement and the advertising was so prominent and well executed that you couldn’t help but appreciate the effort and creative direction that went into the movie.
Supported by a star studded cast, Barbie took off to new heights; which is why Barbie (or Ken!) is the PERFECT Halloween costume idea.
Not only is Barbie a relatively easy look to execute, but you have a plethora of Barbie’s to choose from. Do you want to be a mermaid barbie (hey Dua Lipa, and with the amount of little mermaid costumes currently going, this shouldn’t be too hard!), or Brunette Barbie played by Sex Education’s Maeve? Do you want to be a Barbie variation like Midge? You could be roller skating Barbie (I’m talking fluoro leotard, roller skates and a high ponytail). Or just good old fashioned stereotypical Barbie played by our one and only Margot Robbie.
If you’re lacking creative inspiration, Barbie is a good go to option, because outfits such as her western pink outfit are easy to purchase online (shout out to princess polly for having the "Marcia Vest Top" which is literally the same), and may be great for another use at a western/cowboy themed party in the future!
The Wednesday dance was one of the most talked about pop culture moments in 2023. You know the one (if you don’t, watch it and get acquainted with it…).
The Addams family are not new (we’re talking 1991 release date!), but Jenna Ortega’s rendition of Wednesday was a breath of fresh air into the franchise making Wednesday the PERFECT easy to pull together and topical costume.
All you need for a perfect Wednesday is black hair in braids, a black dress and some chunky black shoes. Top that off with some dark lipstick and you’ve got yourself the look. For extra points, learn the dance as a party trick.
This one is for the Bridgerton stans… Now, I thought I wouldn’t fall for a Bridgerton character more than Miss Kate Sharma (I mean Simone Ashley is absolutely gorgeous), but then the Bridgerton prequel “A Queen Charlotte Story” was released and I was proven wrong.
I don’t know if it was farmer george or the violin rendition of Sza’s “Nobody Gets Me” that had me in such a chokehold over this show, but India Amarteifio’s portrayal of a young Queen Charlotte is one of such poise, elegance and headstrongness that she makes the perfect costume choice for an independent baddie looking to portray one.
Her dark features and staunch demeanour may be hard to replicate, but the costume designers have said that it is all about the poof, with some jewels up top. Amazon has no shortage of Bridgerton-esque dresses - paired with a crown and curly hair and you’re good to go.
A woman we barely knew two years ago, now a household name. She stole the scene in Pink Panthress’s “Boys A Liar”, and has never looked back.
I had the absolute privilege of watching Ice spice perform live almost two weeks ago, and boy was it a journey. The crowd was FULL of men wearing shirts saying “I’m a proud munch” (Alexa, play Munch by Ice Spice!), and girls wearing orange wigs swinging them up and throwing them around the mosh pit. It was then that I had this incredible idea unfold; Ice Spice would be such an EASY to execute yet absolute bad bitch Halloween costume.
Ice Spice would be as simple as a beat face, an orange afro, flare jeans that are tight at the waist and a cropped top. You could sub out the pants for a matching mini skirt, and as long as you have a thick chain around your neck, you’ll be serving ice.
We have all known and loved Rihanna for the better part of almost two decades. Literally. So, when Rihanna announced that she was coming out of retirement to perform at the superbowl in 2023, it was one of the most anticipated and iconic moments.
Her red superbowl jumpsuit is a stand out statement that is easily recognizable, and if you have your friends dress in all white puffer jackets, you can have them be your back-up dancers. Heck, you can even recreate the famous rude boy dance that went instantly viral on tik tok.
This costume is mentioned last, but certainly not least, because it’s such a low effort high return costume. You can get a red zip front jumpsuit from literally anywhere, but if that’s too hard, a red full sleeve top and pants/tights can also do. Slick your hair in a ponytail, hold some fenty beauty on the night and you’re good to go.
So Chums, with 2023 being a year full of fun moments, incredible characters and iconic celebrity performances, there is absolutely no shortage of Halloween costume inspo.
