Whatever Happened To The Skinny Scarf
By Sophia Trimble
Once an integral part of noughties fashion, the skinny scarf has resurfaced.

What comes after Y2K? The noughties of course, and that means skinny scarves.
As our infatuation with Y2K fashion reaches its peak, get ready to embrace the nostalgia of the noughties, and with it, the return of skinny scarves. As we ever-so-slowly transition from Y2K to the noughties, we’re likely to see a whole bunch of trends from around 2003-2007 pop up.
In its heyday, the skinny scarf was a massive part of noughties fashion. Need I jog your memory? Some of the fashion trailblazers who made skinny scarves an intrinsic part of their look were Ashley Tisdale, Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie, Hilary Duff with her girl-next-door charm, and indie sleaze queen, Kate Moss. Each ‘it’ girlie who had a skinny scarf adorning their neck styled it in their own distinctive way. They certainly left their mark on the noughties fashion era as a whole.

Fast forward to the present day, and we are seeing a new wave of fashion influencers donning the skinny scarf. Devon Lee Carlson, Kaia Gerber, Bambi Northwood-Blyth, and Matilda Djerf just to name a few. But among them is our style queen, Bella Hadid, who’s endorsement adds a certain appeal to the trend. As these contemporary icons embrace the skinny scarf, I’m overly confident it’s soon to become a must-have for fashion enthusiasts seeking a touch of elegance to add to their outfits.
So what’s with the timing? Why are skinny scarves back all of a sudden? The reason we’re seeing them crop up now is because of the trend cycle. Working at an accelerated pace thanks to social media and fast fashion, the trend cycle has propelled the revival of this accessory a few years earlier than we were initially expecting it.
It’s giving thirty, flirty, and thriving.
To everyone who isn’t here for thin scarves and think they are useless (you may have a point, a skinny scarf isn’t exactly going to keep your neck warm) I say give them a chance. Let this nonsensical trend seep into your wardrobe and watch how an adorable, and undeniably chic little accessory can instantly make an outfit look put together - it’s giving thirty, flirty, and thriving.

Personally, I'm obsessed with this trend and it’s only going to gain more traction. So, whether it's silky, itchy, sparkly, metallic, or crochet, go pick up a skinny scarf and you too can be at the forefront of this emerging trend. Let its slender embrace be your fashion statement, as you pay homage to the icons of the noughties. There is a skinny scarf out there for everyone, waiting to compliment your unique style.
The best place to find them is at your local thrift store - true noughties vintage! However, if you’re still not sold, here’s a range of different scarves that you can pick up and try out for yourself!
