BY JENNY JUNG
Discover Auckland's underground fashion revolution: Te Wiki Āhua o Aotearoa, where creativity, community and couture collide with unfiltered energy.
28 AUG- 2024
Get excited — Auckland’s fashion underground is rising with Te Wiki Āhua o Aotearoa. Finally, something to do in this city.
When the news hit that NZFW was cancelled, most saw a roadblock; Nina Bailey and Sophia Kwon saw an opportunity. Enter Te Wiki Āhua o Aotearoa—an underground fashion week that's as much about shaking up the system as it is about showcasing the vibrant, untapped creative energy simmering beneath the surface of Tāmaki Makaurau. This show will be located at the iconic Raynham Park on K Road.
"In Auckland, talent is everywhere, but the platforms to showcase it? Scarce," says Nina Bailey. "We needed a space for our creative voices to be heard, or we risk losing the very essence of Aotearoa's artistic culture."
What started as a rebellious brainstorm with Billy of Rogue Aotearoa quickly evolved into a full-blown movement. The Āhua team, an eclectic mix of designers, models, photographers, DJs, and more, banded together with one goal: to create a fashion event that truly belongs to the people. With no commercial agendas, this project is driven by passion, community and a love for couture. Not to mention that 100% of the profits are going to Palestine, reflecting the collective's deep commitment to causes that matter to them.
