Let’s ask AKL’s IG Food Bloggers

With the rise of food review blogs on Instagram, I have found a few names to trust.

Aucklanders are pretty spoilt for choice when it comes to eating out. From fine dining to comfort food, this city caters to a wide pool of cuisines from all corners of the globe. The tricky part is finding the best spots to avoid disappointment.

“What am I going to eat today?” This is a daily question that haunts the independent. Jaded by juggling life and work, I often end up spending hours on the couch, scrolling through my phone, trying to answer it. The struggle is real.
With the rise of food review blogs on Instagram, I have found a few names to trust. You’ll often find me tagging my boyfriend on threads-a not-so-subtle hint of where I want to be swooped up and taken on a Friday night.

Below are my favourite Instagram foodies who have influenced every dinner of mine for the past year. I also included some top-notch recommendations after testing these meals on your behalf. Get ready to satiate your appetite.

'@EatingUpAuckland

Danielle is the queen running @EatingUpAuckland. She specialises in scouting for the best noodles, snacks, drinks, and brunch spots. I think I love her fast food reviews the most as we share the same go-to order.
All of Danielle’s posts come packed with a number of excited and agreeable comments. When you see food reviews with plenty of engagement below, you know that their raving is convincing the masses and the source is reliable.

This review at Holly’s Cafe was a bloody excellent recommendation. My best friend and I thoroughly enjoyed this brisket baguette for our hangover brekkie. Danielle has excellent taste and convinces well. I am a gal who appreciates her quest for spice and an agenda for something sweet. @EatingUpAuckland is a gal who can also get behind a few cocktails over her meal so if this style of eating is similar to yours, I would highly recommend following.

If you’re following @EatLitFood, you know that Albert is one of a kind. His captions demand your attention, and while your jaw drops, you won't stop reading. If you are yet to follow him, be warned of his uncensored and aggressive critiques. He’s usually bang on, but at times, my scepticism creeps up for recos such as mince pies + chocolate. Take it with a grain of salt, I say!

There was a time when I was an ELF worshipper. As luck would have it, the day this review went up, I had dinner plans with no destination. Lilian was fully booked, but my eagerness for this meal paid off as I manifested a cancellation for the two-person nook in the corner. I ordered almost exactly what Albert had suggested, and thank God I did because I am still thinking about this meal today.

While openly controversial, it’s exciting to see an account like Albert’s gain traction globally as he solely reviews New Zealand food and restaurants. You’ll see small businesses grow hundreds of followers and have booked out evenings after one post.

In the mood for ramen? Let’s go to Joyce. I think her photograph of this bowl is what really spoke, and it was saying, “come get me,” so I did. Great broth, perfect amount of spice and soul. I got to try a spot that I passed every day on my way to work, which was a plus too. Joyce’s account not only reviews Auckland’s cuisine, but she is a brilliant cook, showing off all her skills to her loved ones. I’d follow if you're into your comfort foods and appreciate hearing from a gal who, too, feels warm and comforting.

“I’m either eating, thinking about food, or recovering from a food coma”, Joyce’s approach to food is what I want in life. I am also a huge fan of her Top Picks selection, which you’ll discover in her highlights. A place of action to swipe through has your plan your next outing.

'@Oksana_Overeats

Oksana is the girl I go to when I feel like a boujee outing. Maybe her incredible food photography makes everything she eats look insane, but her recommendations are damn fine. Digging into this account further, I’m reminded of the 2014 term “Food Porn”. Oksana knows how to show off her dishes and isn't shy about creating reels that make your mouth water.

After reading this review of Gaja, Ponsonby, I booked the spot for my birthday dinner. I didn't realise it in the end, but I ordered almost precisely what she did for our table, and it was a bloody joy to devour. Oksana tends to go for city central and central east spots, so if you're living in that region, I would take her recommendations!

'@_Georgieats_

If you have a sweet tooth looking for a new brunch spot, Georgia is the girl I recommend you go to. With a gram filled with homemade meals, cocktails, and product reviews, you can feel her love for food, and her buzz is infectious.

There’s something about desert outings that I have never really gotten behind. It’s always what is on offer at the spot I am at. Thankfully, Georgia is making it known that the night is not over after dinner. Cocktails, sweet treats and encore meals are in the area! This one on Island Gelato has me sold. So excuse me while I schedule myself a well-earned ice cream dash.
