Here's Why You Should Steal Your Grandma's Brooches

Not convinced? Here’s how to add a splash of sparkle.

10 JAN - 2024
No longer just for your Nana, Brooches are back.
Brooches… those elegant little accessories that adorn our grandmothers' jackets, blouses, and shawls, are making a much warranted comeback in 2024. Originating in ancient times, these decorative pins have a rich history, being worn by both men and women throughout different cultures and time periods.

But why are brooches back in the spotlight now, after being out of it for so long? Apart from the cyclical nature of fashion trends, many trend forecasters say the reason brooches are popping up again now is because of the rise of zoom call culture. Even after the global pandemic which spanned years, a lot of our interactions are still taking place virtually - work meetings, interviews, catch ups with family and friends. During a zoom call, we focus mainly on the top half of a person's body, and what better way to add a touch of sparkle than with a breath-taking brooch?
Brooches have quickly transformed into a must-have accessory for 2024, with thousands of fashion girlies already jumping on the trend train. They have a timeless feel, which allows them to enhance any outfit, from playful to professional. Plus, thrifting for vintage brooches has become something of a treasure hunt, and with most brooches being god-knows-how-old, who knows what magic pins you could uncover.
Need another reason to believe in brooches? One of the exciting aspects of brooches is their versatility. They can be styled in countless ways. Try wearing a brooch on either side of an open jacket - a cute way to show off your top while still staying warm. Another quirky way to wear a brooch that isn’t just chucked on your lapel (which still looks divine btw) is to pin it onto a garment it doesn't quite belong on, like a choker necklace (as seen on Janelle Monae) or your bag. Bag pins and charms are perfect for easing yourself into the brooch trend, without diving in head first.

Don't be surprised to see men embracing this trend as well. Brooches have been spotted on the red carpet and at prestigious events like the Met Gala, where they were not only paying homage to fashion houses like Chanel but also establishing themselves as a rising accessory for men. In fact, according to The RealReal's 2023 luxury consignment report, demand for brooches was up 27% during the 2022 holiday season, while pins from Gucci were up by 70%. We’re so here for it! Such a fun way to spice up a boring black suit.
So, whether you're into vintage vibes or modern designs, brooches have got your back. These tiny accessories pack a big punch and will make your everyday looks sparkle like never before. I, for one, am happy to have them. They add a little spice to an outfit, and for all I care, the more accessories, the better. This is giving us options people!
