Fresh Off The Runway: Spring Summer 2024 Fashion Trends
BY GEORGIA SEXTON
Yet another season of fashion weeks have rolled around Chums, this time it’s Spring/Summer 2024.
28 NOV - 2023
We’ve done the research on what’s trending on the runway so you don’t have to. Wallets at the ready, it’s go time girl.
Of course there was a lot of minimalism this season, as there always is on the runway. Low key, quiet luxury, monochromatic looks. I feel we know what I’m talking about… so let's get to the fun stuff.
Lean into the Ultra Feminine: Bows & Flowers
From big bows to little bows, crystal rosettes to azalea bras, ultra feminine details are everywhere this runway season. Bows are getting an upgrade from their balletcore roots and I’m liking what I’m seeing. Simone Rocha made it clear that there’s no such thing as a bow too big, whilst Tanner Fletcher showed how bows can be added as a small detail to elevate any look. Carolina Herrera took on high contrast bows in the form of a sash detailing - it’s giving 90’s prom and I’m obsessed.
We know florals for spring aren't groundbreaking (thank you very much Miranda Priestly), but these distinctive flower motifs are putting a new spin on a classic style. Flowers in every shape, size and iteration graced the runway. David Koma showcased flower details across their entire collection, and PatBo turned heads with their jaw dropping azalea bra top. Sandy Liang couldn't get enough and had bows AND a flower on a dress! We are absolutely obsessed with these super girly details. Adding a bow or applique flower to your fit is a guaranteed way to take it to the next level.
The 20’s Called, and Dropped Waistlines Answered
We’ve done high waisted, some brave soldiers have ventured into low waisted, and now we are seeing the revitilisation of the drop waist. The drop waist dates back to the roaring twenties. Think flapper girl dancing to jazz in a speakeasy. This was a time when women were breaking away from the constraints of corsets and embracing a more independent lifestyle. These dresses featured a waistline that sat lower than the natural waist, typically around the hips. They were designed to be loose, allowing women to move and dance, which was a radical departure from the previously popular hourglass silhouette.
The drop waist trend is finally cropping back up in the trend cycle (after a small resurfacing in the eighties) and I’m not going to lie… I’m sold. Eudon Choi and Mirror Palais showed us exactly how a drop waist is done in short and long form dresses, and JW Anderson blew everything out of the park with a drop waisted trench coat. I don’t think it will take long for this style to trickle into the mainstream, so start hunting for second-hand drop waisted gems now!
Slouchy Suits & Oversized Tailoring
Despite it being the S/S season, we picked up where A/W fashion week left off, with boxy blazers and shoulder pads. It just wouldn’t be fashion week if there wasn’t a new contemporary take on the classic suit silhouette. I think what has allowed this style to stand the test of time is it’s comfort and versatility. You really can’t put a price on slipping into a suit that feels as comfy as your favorite loungewear. Dion Lee paired exaggerated shoulders with a cropped cut and lace detailing, whilst Coach embodied the same silhouette with leather and zips. Retrofit gave a denim twist to the oversized look which is definitely my favourite. It's incredible how a few bold tweaks to a familiar silhouette can breathe new life into an old style.
Show Us Some Skin!
Nipples were OUT on the runway this season gf. Whether it was tule, crochet, lace or mesh, the top dogs in fashion want us to show some skin. I, for one, am absolutely gagging over Palomo Spain’s embellished mesh with lace detailing, paired with blue denim and boxers. That’s hot. Paolo Carzana went guns blazing with a red two piece, showing us how to do sheer with no inhibitions. Michael Kors took a parred back approach with a monochromatic look that is more wearable than its extravagant counterparts. If you aren't ready to get your nips out (don’t worry, I’m not quite there yet either), then just chuck on a lacy bra underneath. If you're feeling brave, you can wear a boxy jacket over a mesh top, or a big tshirt over a lace skirt. Fashion is about taking risks people, and this trend calls for it!
Bustling With Volume
Let’s end on something I didn't think we would see on the runway this season, the return of the bustle. Fashion designers are revisiting this historical gem that peaked in popularity around the late 19th century. Bustles are a padded undergarment that's used to add fullness and drama to a gown. It aids in creating an hourglass silhouette that was all the rage in the Victorian era. I personally am obsessed with the camp energy bustles are giving. Christian Siriano’s take on the bustle is party princess perfection, whilst 16Arlington shows us this trend can be extremely chic too. Kim Shiu takes the trend up a notch by pairing it with a bubble hem line… Obsessed!!
There you have it! A quick rundown on what's been gracing the runways in London and New York Fashion Weeks for Spring/Summer 2024.
I’ve kept a close eye on the runways in Milan and Paris for their Fashion Weeks, and you Chums will be the first to know what's hot.
