When you want a birthday done right, you often have to take matters into your own hands.

Remember when we used to count down the days before our birthdays? And nowadays, birthdays lamely sneak up, or we prefer to turn a blind eye to the fact that we’re ageing. Chatty says, not a year older, but a year wiser, team! Let’s be honest, these years have been tough, so we all deserve to be celebrated on our special birthday. Statistically speaking, it's likely that you or someone close to you is celebrating a birthday soon, and planning things to do on a birthday can feel like a lot of effort. We are here to ease the pressure and provide some fabulous ideas to help organise a day dedicated to YOU or your most favourite person.

This list has been curated for gals that want to get wholesome and do something artsy while swirling some wine. Sound like a bit of you? Scroll below.

Paint and Sip

Remember your days in primary school when art class was the highlight of your week? Channel that energy into taking your birthday squad to a paint-and-sip evening. Create a masterpiece with no experience needed. You’ll head home buzzing to hang up your new dig. I took my mum to one of my favourite bars that happened to be having a PaintVine evening, and it was the best bonding experience.

In one hand, a paintbrush, and in the other, a glass of Shiraz. Here are our favourite paint and sip groups hosted across New Zealand.

Pottery Classes

The Clay Centers Coffee & Clay Workshop

Every Friday Evening, the Clay Collective in Ellerslie hosts relaxed entry-level pottery classes.
This is the perfect opportunity if you and your pals have been hanging out to fulfil their pottery girl dreams. An energising and exciting way to start your birthday weekend and something that you may just become addicted to. Sculpt yourself something to remember your birthday by, and enjoy doing something completely different with your favourite people.

Sculpt and Sip

Paint Vine also does epic clay sculpture classes if you like the broader range of venues. Instead of clay on a wheel, the clay is on the table in front of you, and you can throw it back to pre-school ages making funky shapes with playdough. Release your inner child for your next birthday.

Flower Workshop

Instead of expecting flowers on your birthday, why not create your own? And better yet, why not do it with your favourite people while sipping your favourite drinks? Oh, so good, eh?

As your resident florist, let me tell you this is a great time. I’ve hosted a couple of flower birthday parties, and everyone has a great time. Sitting with a swoon of flowers and complete freedom over how you're going to arrange a vase is the best place to be on your birthday. These florists are the florists below and always ensure to provide a great time. Enjoy the aromas from the blooms and wines.

Make Your Jewellery

The final group workshop that I want to talk about is jewellery classes. Yes! These exist! And it just may be perfect for you and your pals to celebrate a particular date. Over the past couple of years, heaps of these studios have been popping up around New Zealand and are attracting excitable groups every weekend. Make a ring, pendant, earrings, bracelet, whatever you fancy. If you're sentimental, why not engrave something to set the memory in stone? These classes are widely popular and great for groups.
