30 DEC - 2022
These are the 2022 celebrity outfits that defined the year.
We're highlighting the moments that were all over our feeds and lips. It's been a big year as fashion returned from the chaos that bestowed the past two years. We had red carpet moments that sent the world into orbit and hotly anticipated runway debuts. The supers made comebacks, and Rihanna participated in one of the most viral pregnancy reveals in history.
Expectations continue to rise as we go towards 2023. In the following, we reflect on the most shared, controversial, outstanding, and discussed fashion moments of 2022.
If current trends are any indication, the most remarkable occurrences of the last year present a wild image of the world as it is right now. Twenty-two was a monumental year for the fashion industry, complete with groundbreaking new releases, innovative new technology, the return of long-forgotten supermodels, and lavish new runway shows.
Honourable Mention Timothée Chalamet's Haider halter
Honourable Mention Nicole Kidman for Vanity Fair’s 2022 Hollywood Issue
In terms of street fashion, Rihanna reigns supreme. She dressed up for the occasion by donning a vintage Chanel puffer and Christian Lacroix jewellery before taking to the streets of Harlem with her boyfriend A$AP Rocky to make the news public. Images captured by celebrity photographer Diggzy and posted to Instagram on February 2 nearly brought down the entire internet.
The year 2022 will be remembered for one of its breakout stars: Julia Fox. Her much-talked-about relationship earlier this year ended quickly, but she has maintained her status as fashion media queen with her daring and unique DIY outfits. The first trend was ultra-low-rise jeans with the waistband worn as a bandeau; the second was a classic white ribbed tank top that had been split in half to create a crop top and skirt. With her cult following we can only dream of whats next for Fox's fashion.
Dua, Meghan and Donatella at the Grammys
Two Grammy winners, both dressed in black gowns by the same designer, presented Olivia Rodrigo with the Best New Artist award. Of course, the incident was reminiscent of the 1998 MTV Video Music Awards, where Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston wore identical dresses to the ceremony and joked about how they were sure theirs was the only one of its kind.
You stole my look!” said Megan as she looked Lipa up and down.
“I was told I had the exclusive,” Lipa joked. “I’m going to have to have a talk with Donatella.”
Good banter for an iconic moment of awards season.
Paris Hilton in Versace
Paris Hilton wore seven dresses throughout the course of her three-day wedding ceremony last November. Still, Donatella Versace said, "What's one more?" and sent Hilton down the Milan runway as a pink Versace bride to close the spring/summer 2023 show.
Fittingly Paris wore a hot pink mini dress with a draped neckline reminiscent of the silver Julien MacDonald dress Hilton wore for her famous 21st birthday in 2002.
I’m sure you’ve heard that Patagonia did the “unthinkable” in corporate America and gave away the company in the fight against climate change.
An American retailer of outdoor clothing founded by Yvon Chouinard in 1973, Patagonia was always known for being environmentally conscious. In a world where large corporations focus on the bottom line of making a profit, Patagonia paves the way to a more sustainable future.
Bella, Lil Nas X, Gigi and Serena Williams for Vogue World
Serena Williams opened the runway show in a custom metallic cape dress from Balenciaga. The show was filled with heads of houses, celebrrites and fashion lovers. Lil Nas X performed and Williams and both Hadid sisters joined him on the runway during the epic performance. The photos speak for themselves, such an epic tribute and moment.
The Year of Bella
Hadid certainly had a big year in 2021. Who could forget the Schiaparelli gown she donned to the Cannes Film Festival? A viral moment at Coperni's latest show garnered $26.3 million worth of press, and social media became obsessed with the model'swardrobe beginning in 2022, when she appeared on her first solo Vogue cover. The fact that a sound bite of Bella stating "well, my name is...Bella Hadid" has been used in 155,700 videos (and counting) on TikTok is evidence that Gen Z has accepted her as the decade's first super. She was named Model of the Year at the Fashion Awards in London earlier this month, in case there was any doubt.
Blake Lively in Versace
We knew that Blake Lively, as co-chair of the 2022 Met Gala, would turn heads with her red carpet look, but her Atelier Versace gown was even more stunning than we had imagined. The colours, the drama and that gigantic bow. One for the met gala books.
