21 SEPT - 2022
Although it was an unpredictable year for pretty much everything, one thing we can thank 2020 for is bringing the return of Y2K fashion.
As we know, fashion is cyclical. This means certain styles and trends flow through a never-ending popularity loop. What goes around comes back around, as Justin Timberlake would say. Remember that pair of low rise jeans you found in your mum's closet recently? You may have winced at the sight of them during the high-waisted-craze of the mid 2010s, but these days, they’re back!
Just like the low rise cut was popular in the early 2000s, it’s popular again now. That's how the trend cycle works. There’s usually about a twenty year gap between each trend going out, and coming back in to fashion. And just as the trend cycle predicted, twenty years after the year 2000, we are seeing the rebirth of micro skirts, velour tracksuits, platform sandals, and bedazzlements. Each with a mildly modernised spin of course. Embracing almost every one of these back-again trends is icon, Bella Hadid.
Being the ‘it’ girl of street style the past couple of years, Bella has alway been on top of the latest trends. Miss Hadid’s off-duty model wear is very distinctive and easily recognised by the public for its Y2K influence. Dupes of whatever Bella wears will pop up in fast fashion chains asap once the paps snap a candid of her decked out heavily in designer or in niche small brands.

It could even be argued that the youngest Hadid sister is currently running fashion, with designers fighting over who gets to dress the supermodel as she goes about her mundane everyday tasks. Bella was recently spotted at a gas station wearing an inverted love heart shaped crop top and low waisted joggers, a few weeks later and Glassons, Princess Polly, and Tiger Mist were dropping garments with such similarity it could be considered criminal. Bella has a tight grip on fashion in the western world and is a huge influence on the trends we are seeing today.
Let’s break down some of our personal favourite Y2K looks from Bella this year.
Cher Horowitz Chic
Legs for days! Bella pairs a brown plaid mini skirt with a high neck zip-up jacket and some tricolour Nomasei loafers with socks for a more preppy look than her usual. For accessories she donned a tan chunky leather bag, oval shaped sunglasses, and a pair of classic pearl earrings. Looking very Cher Horowitz from Clueless and we absolutely adore it!
Video Game Character Vibes
This relaxed street style is flattering on pretty much everyone so it’s no surprise that Bella often opts for the big pants, little top combo. Dusty chocolate brown, draw-string parachute pants and a tight fitting, red zip-up make autumnal colours the centre of this outfit. Miss Hadid is wearing matching brown and red sneakers, and is serving video game character vibes with the multi plait ponytail.
Flirty, Flippy Denim in NY
The mini skirt and crop top combo is not out of the ordinary for Bella either. She sports this cute pleated denim number with big black boots and a fun, orange and pink, Comme Des Garcons cardigan. Very reminiscent of the silhouette we saw so often in the early 2000s. Wearing her signature oval sunnies and a baby baguette bag in yellow and black. So colourful, so Y2K.
Louis V Realness
Okay, so this one technically isn’t ‘street’ style, but we couldn’t not include it! Coming in hot and bright from a random balcony during Paris fashion week, Bella’s all dressed up in a funky, pink fur, trapper hat, Louis Vuitton chain top, and light-wash, low-rise baggy jeans. It’s always exciting to see celebs experimenting with their personal style and exploring outside of the box. Fashion is meant to be fun!
