10 Winter Essentials You Need in Your Capsule Wardrobe
BY GEORGIA ROSE
The cold has come to bite. From boots to bombers, we round up our favourites in winter fashion.

6 JUL - 2021
Each year, I find any reason to escape to the slopes just so I can pull out my ‘extra’ winter pieces.
Despite what we see in movies, winter is not glamorous. Aucklanders, you get me - one minute the sun is shining and the next, I’m regretting leaving the umbrella at home. But regardless of the weather changes, winter also happens to be the only season I really like dressing for. I’m a layers gal. It’s all about finding the balance between a functional outfit and a fashionable one.
So - keep it simple, stupid. The key to a healthy wardrobe is to pick items that will stand the test of time. One-hit-wonders don’t have a place around here. Do I sound like a broken record? Stuffed deep down in my vacuum bags are winter items I have acquired over many years that get worn every winter.
From coats to boots here are my favourite key pieces for winter and beyond.
The Trench Coat
Whenever I think 'trench coat,' I think Burberry (did you hear we are finally getting an Auckland store?!). But for those who can’t drop $2k on a trench (same) but still want to invest in a forever piece - Moochi has really saved us this season.
The Lug Boot
Admittedly, this is a trend I have tried to steer clear of but I’ve been sucked in and my boots are currently somewhere over the pacific. With endless outfit options, I can see why. Grunge up a slip skirt, give your floral dress a bit of an edge, or keep it all monochrome with a pant look.
The Leather Pant
On the hunt for leather pants that don’t break the bank? Agolde has come to the rescue. A leather pant is timeless and a piece you’ll hold on to forever.

Knit Sweater
Wear it casually on the weekend or pulled off the shoulder with a gold chain necklace. Kiwi brand, Knitted, is proving we can have locally made knitwear at an affordable price! On our list next? The Audrey.
Cashmere
Olivia, the founder of Muse Boutique, has created a luxurious range of cashmere sweaters for winter. My personal favourite? The Harrison Hoodie. Comfortable but luxe is also my personal style - dress it up with a blazer and you’re good to go.
The Loafer
This is the ‘it’ shoe of the season. When something is on trend, I often take a while to jump on. Prada launched it but that’s no reason to miss out. Style with a pair of straight leg pants and an oversized sweater for an off-duty look.
The Puffer
Okay, I have never loved a puffer jacket. But as Maggie Marilyn put it, “you never second-guess grabbing a puffer when you’re halfway out the door on a frosty morning.” Long gone are the days of wearing a Kathmandu puffer to high school (thank God.) MM’s The Beyond Puffer is made of recycled materials and is possibly the chicest I’ve seen.

The Bomber Jacket
Bomber jackets are a staple, so why not go for the (faux) fur look. Can you picture yourself with a glass of wine by the fire in Queenstown? Me too.
The Slip Skirt
A slip skirt in winter? Call me crazy but, pop a chunky knit on and pair it with your favourite boots, and, well, you’ve just converted your most worn summer item into a winter one! This goes for slip dresses as well.
The Structured Coat
If you are only to purchase one coat forever, ignore the trench and purchase a structured coat. You’ll always have a reason to wear it - to work, on holiday - it goes with every outfit. If you’re budget is generous, I have always loved a Camilla and Marc coat - however, Friends with Frank are *chefs kisses*.
