Everything's better when it lasts a little longer.

Let’s talk business. Creating a long-wearing base is not just about the products, it’s about how you use them. We all know about primers, setting sprays and powder – but how can we better utilise these products to make our makeup last all night? Let’s talk about it!

The Sandwich Method

The sandwich method is one of the best tips I have learned over the years. As the name suggests, use your setting spray in-between the different layers of your base routine to form a “sandwich” of sorts. It should look a little something like this: setting spray, foundation, setting spray, concealer, setting spray, setting powder, setting spray, finishing powder. However, if this is too excessive for you, you can use the setting spray at different intervals to suit your preferences.

This method works a lot better than primer alone. Primer is overrated. It’s one of those products that only make a difference when you really know what you’re looking for. That’s why when you try a viral primer, you might be left disappointed at the results.

Not sure what setting spray to use? Check out our article on the top-rated setting sprays below. We even reveal what setting spray Beyonce used during her Renaissance tour.

Eyeshadow Primer

If eyeshadow primer can be used to prevent crease-y, greasy eyelids, what’s stopping you from using it on the rest of your face?

Tap your eyeshadow primer onto your nose, pores or fine lines before foundation for the smoothest complexion that will last you hours. If you’re like me and your makeup creases around the smile lines, try this hack and watch your makeup stay flawless for the whole entire night.

Bonus Tip: Use an eyeshadow primer with a tint for boosted coverage in your problem areas. I love to use the M.A.C Pro Longwear Paint Pots over the nose or under the eyes for extra special events.

Less is More

The less foundation you use, the less you have to worry. If you love full coverage and this tip doesn’t quite sit right with you, don’t worry – that’s what concealer is for.

Oftentimes, you don’t need coverage on every inch of your face. Use your foundation to even out your complexion and evaluate where you need some extra help before you go in with concealer.

Generally, concealers are less emollient and tend to stay on the skin a lot longer than foundation products. Of course, this depends on the formulation of your concealer but this is a great general rule that will definitely help you with a longer lasting base routine.

Clinique: Even Better Clinical Serum Foundation

The best thing to come out from Clinique is the Even Better Clinical Serum Foundation. After using it on countless different people with varying skin-types, it is on the top of my favourites list for a long-wearing and non-cakey foundation that still looks relatively natural on the skin. The only downside? The shade range. However, if you’re lucky enough to find a shade that matches your skin-tone, definitely give this foundation a go.

We also recommend this foundation for anyone who doesn’t like to have too many products in their collection as it is very buildable. Use this foundation on the daily as a sheer wash of colour and bump it up for your night activities where you need some extra assistance in the coverage department.

Cream Foundation as Bronzer or Contour

Don’t underestimate the power of strategic layering. For a long-wearing base, apply a deeper shade of cream or stick foundation as your bronzer or contour.

Sometimes, using powders with a brush can disrupt your base and weaken the integrity of your foundation. By using a stick foundation instead of a cream bronzer or contour, your complexion will last for hours without any fading.

If you want to try this method, we recommend picking up the Hourglass Vanish Stick Foundation. A little goes a long way and blends like no other. Yes, it’s expensive, but it will also last you a very long time! We even love this product for concealing and highlighting the complexion for the most flawless finish.
