Everytime I apply this sunscreen, it’s like I’m switching on a Benjamin Button effect.

Deliciously dewy, your spirits will be lifted even pre-coffee.

When I was in high school back in the early noughties, we had very limited options when it came to suncare. I remember how I used to absolutely detest having to wear SPF on my face due to its alarmingly reflective finish that made my face look like a greasy pizza - as if being a spotty dweeby muso geek with braces and aggressively frizzy hair wasn’t traumatic enough. A certain blue household brand was pretty much the only option for us back then. Oh, how far we have come in the beauty world in the past decade (wait - I mean two decades…)!

Fast forward to now, we have a huge array of sunscreens to choose from. However, I’d say the offerings are still quite a mixed bag and a hit-or-miss situation in terms of efficacy and finish. Plus, if you have sensitive eyes like I do, it can be near impossible to find something that won’t make your eyes water, sting and puff up like you’ve just gone through a bad breakup.

When judging a sunscreen, I consider its price point as we need so much of it on a regular basis, the size, SPF factor, hydrating ingredients, the scent, weight, if it works well under makeup, whether it gives a white cast and of course, the finish. This means that runny formulas are a no-go as it will sting my eyes, chalky ones are obviously a nope, and an oily finish is an absolute write off as that just takes me back to being a teenager which is just pure PTSD.

If you’ve been part of our Chatty Chums community, you’ll know that I love the asap Super B Complex Serum. It’s their bestseller for a reason - think brighter, tighter, plumper skin - and their suncare range does not disappoint.

asap Moisturising Defence SPF50+

Introducing the asap Moisturising Defence SPF50+. This is a new formula that I’ve been testing out for the past few weeks since its launch and I’ve been absolutely loving it! Marketed as a 3-in-1 formula that gives high UVA + UVB protection, has hydrating skincare qualities to work as a moisturiser and also a makeup primer, it’s versatility at its best. Most of the time, multi-functional formulas will lack in some of its promises but this one actually delivers on everything they say. I’ll usually mix the asap B and C serum together as an antioxidant-rich base, skip the moisturiser and go straight in with the moisturising defence SPF50+! It makes the process super quick and also allows for my skincare to be lightweight to avoid pilling.

UVA and UVB Protection

Avobenzone, the most widely used UVA filter in the world, is utilized in the asap moisturising defence SPF50+ to block the full UVA spectrum. It is said that 95% of the UV radiation that reaches us is UVA. With its relatively long wavelength, it can penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin, causing lasting photo-damage, premature ageing and skin cancer. While UV levels are highest during the summer months, it’s important to note that sun protection should be a year-round commitment, whether you’re indoors or outdoors. UV radiation passes through windows and clouds, and at times, thin clouds can enhance UV levels due to scattering!

My skin instantly plumps up, is hydrated and looks radiant from the inside out.

As for UVB protection, this is usually filtered out effectively by the ozone in the atmosphere. However, as we all know, NZ is pretty much void of it. Although UVB cannot penetrate beyond superficial skin layers, it is responsible for producing sunburn and plays the biggest role in causing skin cancers.

If you’re asking yourself if you need to reapply when you’re indoors… the answer is yes. Sunscreen is no longer effective after a certain period of time, which is why the rule of thumb for reapplication is to do this every 2 hours!

Texture and Sensitivity

This leads to me chatting about the finish. It gives a deliciously dewy finish that is not to be mistaken with oily shininess. Everytime I apply this sunscreen, it’s like I’m switching on a Benjamin Button effect. My skin instantly plumps up, is hydrated and looks radiant from the inside out. It looks like my skin cells are 22 years old and not 32 years old. I’m VERY partial to this effect. I haven’t found anything else that has a balmy texture like this that envelops my skin. If you have mature or dry skin, you won’t be able to go back to anything else after you’ve tried it.

If you’re someone who suffers from skin and eye sensitivities, you’ll be glad to know that this is designed for all skin types including sensitive skin, and it also doesn’t sting the eyes! When you start sweating, SPF can dribble in and cause huge irritations - a total chore that will break up your flow no matter what you’re doing.

As for the price point, it sits comfortably at $78 for a 75ml tube. The balmy texture allows for a little of it to go a long way - face, neck, decolletage and also the hands - do not forget your hands! A lot of sunscreen that is much poorer in quality will sit only slightly below this price so I really do believe that you’re getting bang for your buck due to how this cosmeceutical formula ticks all the boxes that you need in an SPF.

And that’s a wrap! If you’ve been wondering which sunscreen to try out for this El Niño wave, I urge you to try the asap moisturising defence SPF50+. It doesn’t fall short in any way and every time you apply your morning skincare routine, it will bring you joy - as it should! Even pre-coffee, my spirits feel lifted when my skin glows and visibly looks a decade younger after applying this. It truly is something else!
