St Tropez Gradual Tan Plus Sculpt and Glow Review
BY REBECCA DIEUDONNE
Tan obsessed like the rest of us? St. Tropez’s Gradual Tan has got an upgrade! But does it stand up against the others?
12 JAN - 2019
I set out to review some of the most popular self-tanners with St Tropez Gradual Tan Plus Sculpt and Glow Body Lotion.
I was interested to understand more about the ‘sculpt and tone’ claims. The formula contains Hyaluronic acid to hydrate the skin, while natural sea algae softens and detoxifies the skin. Algae is the ingredient du jour at the moment – it’s a popular addition to include in any topical skin solution to protect against dehydration and sun exposure. This makes sense given the organism’s ability to survive on tidal shores in harsh conditions. It’s also packed with essential nutrients like vitamin A, D, E and K.
Unfortunately, I doubt this tan can actually sculpt your body with regular use (I’m afraid only a healthy diet and regular exercise can achieve this!), but the combination of increased hydration and the sun-kissed glow will certainly help to smooth out any lumps and bumps you may have!
The Process
After removing any existing tan with a light exfoliation, I applied the white lotion evenly across my body. It’s a thick consistency but absorbed quickly and it didn't leave any oily or sticky residue. It has a light smell, but it’s not overly noticeable. I applied this tan with my hands but I was diligent about rinsing them thoroughly afterwards (don’t forget in between your fingers!).
The Sculpt and Glow was left to develop throughout the day – I applied early in the morning and by about midday, my skin was a soft honey shade, which is maybe 1-2 shades darker than my natural skin tone. It felt so soft and hydrated! I had no transfer on my clothing and it didn't smell at all! The tan blended well on my ankles and wrists with no obvious demarcation - which is great!
The Results
I showered in the evening, and my colour didn't even budge. You could definitely use this on an ongoing basis, in lieu of your regular moisturiser to build up a natural looking tan without looking orange (unlike some cheaper gradual tans). It’s been a few days since that initial application and I haven’t needed to apply any moisturiser, my skin still feels so soft and nourished.
I know the hefty price of a $43 gradual tan lotion may be off-putting but in tanning, I believe you get what you pay for. I was a regular user of Bondi Sands, but have noticed a big difference in the hydration of my skin and overall condition after using St Tropez regularly. The final shades are more natural looking, and they hold their colour longer than other formulas. The fade is more even, and removal is a breeze with a simple exfoliation with a glove in the shower.
Would I recommend? You bet I do. This would be best suited to my fair-skinned gals looking for a bit of colour and you can build this up without fear of it looking unnatural. It would also be great for those new to the fake-tanning world, just be mindful of applying evenly and rubbing in well as it doesn’t have a guide colour so you will need to remember where you have applied! Medium toned skins will love the nourishing formula, and could be used in between regular darker tan applications to even out any discolouration.
