Reviewing the New ghd Chronos Hair Straightener

Let's be honest, $500 for a hair straightener is rather expensive. According to ghd, the Chronos hair straightener is worth every penny due to its 3x faster HD motion-responsive technology that gives you sleek results with just one pass. It also promises to keep the hair frizz-free and shiny for up to 24 hours. And who wouldn't love 3x more breakage protection?
Of course, hefty claims often come with hefty prices, so careful consideration is key before taking the plunge on this luxurious straightener, named after the Greek god of time, Kronos, due to its ability to cheat the clock and defy frizz in record time.
I’m not going to lie, I was extremely sceptical of this tool, but as a hairstylist, I knew I had to give the Chronos a fair shot before making any judgement. Before we get into the review, let’s discuss what the HD motion-responsive technology is.

What is HD Motion-Responsive Technology?
In order to reduce breakage and unnecessary damage, the Chronos optimises heat and power delivery by using an intelligent algorithm to identify how the tool is being used. This means that every motion is being recorded to maintain the optimum amount of heat and power from the plates which is a temperature of 185 degrees.
Remember hair straighteners from the 2010’s that had settings reaching up to 210 degrees? Yikes. With the Chronos, you don’t have to worry about frying off your luscious locks due to the latest generation ceramic heaters that adjust the heat levels to keep your hair as healthy as possible.

The Chatty Review
Upon hearing that our Editor, Sophie, had acquired the Chronos, I rushed to her place to investigate the $500 hair straightener for myself. Honestly, I didn’t expect much - I mean, how much better can a hair straightener get? I’ve already spent $430 on the Platinum Plus! And yet, the moment I tried the Chronos, I realised very quickly that it was no regular hair tool.
Sophie’s hair, which I have styled multiple times, is thick, coarse and naturally unruly. So, I knew she would be the perfect person, and challenge, for the Chronos. Before applying any heat to her hair, I spritzed the Bodygaurd heat protectant for coloured hair (also new), eager to test if this straightener could truly tame her hair in one single stroke.
Well, I’ve got to hand it to ghd. Not only did it straighten Sophie's hair in one pass, her hair was noticeably shinier and softer than any other time I had styled her hair. We were both amazed at the transformation during our review. Impressively, her hair remained pin-straight the next morning, a testament to the Chronos’ exceptional performance that is not easily achievable with any old hair straightener.
Since then, I have been putting the Chronos to the test on other people who have been coming into my studio, and I cannot deny that it truly is an elite hair tool. While I genuinely believe that the Chronos is an elevated hair straightening tool, I also believe that it isn’t for everybody.

Is the Chronos Worth It?
If you have naturally textured, curly or frizzy hair, the Chronos is a game changer due to its quick and effective straightening capabilities. It notably enhances hair shine and softness, and you don’t have to worry so much about breakage due to the HD motion-responsive technology. But, on the other hand, it is a $500 tool– not cheap.
My advice? Evaluate whether you are satisfied with your current styling tool. It may be that your straightener isn’t delivering the results you were hoping for when managing your difficult-to-striaghten-hair. In that case, the Chronos is worth every penny. However, for those with fine, straight or wavy hair, the impact of upgrading to the Chronos might not be as transformative because you already have easy to manage hair.
Although it might seem ridiculous to splurge $500 on a hair straightener, I totally understand that this investment would make sense for those who cannot seem to find a tool that works for their hair. Furthermore, the Chronos is a great choice for people who would prefer to use less heat due to its long-lasting effects. Although ghd claims that the Chronos keeps the hair straight for up to 24 hours, I have noticed that my hair can maintain its results for up to 3 days.
At the end of the day, everybody prioritises different things! I reckon being able to straighten your hair the night before to allow for extra sleep is worth $500. I mean, do I really need to do the girl maths for you?
