My Journey to Reducing Rosacea

I kept my expectations very low because I didn’t want to be disappointed, but also because I didn’t really believe there was a complete answer.

I’m naturally pale and have always had quite a pink undertone. I burn in the sun, go red when I work out, so I didn’t even blink when my skin always had a red tinge to it. I put it down to genetics and being very, very pale.

It wasn’t until I began working for a beauty company that I started hearing the word “rosacea” being thrown around. After diving into a bit of research, I immediately self-diagnosed myself with Rosacea and sort of moved on. I never really thought there was anything I could do, it seemed like one of those “incurable” skin conditions and I’d just be a shade of pink for the rest of my life. Everyone had a different experience with products, medication and other methods and nothing seemed to really be working.

While I’ve experimented with different skincare, nothing targeted my actual problem. Sure, I had super hydrated skin, but I constantly covered it up with foundation to hide my rosy cheeks. It wasn’t until I was introduced to asap skincare that I really decided to give it a go, and see what the fuss was about. At the end of the day, trying couldn’t hurt, right?

My Rosacea Skincare Regimen

It all started with asap skincare. I was matched with the lovely Laura from R&R Skin, my closest qualified asap therapist and we got down to sorting my skin out. When it comes to the brand and skincare, she knows the ins and outs!

asap Skincare is Australia’s number 1 cosmeceutical brand - a fact I didn’t know before beginning this journey. The brand specifically formulates products to target difficult skin concerns, drawing on a range of the top skincare actives to ensure the best results. asap products are built to encourage skin cell renewal to create the perfect base, or as they say “the science of beautiful skin” and as I learnt, they couldn’t be more spot on.

For the first month, we completely stripped it back. I used very minimal product, and started on a few asap minis to get my skin through the transition period - a cleanser, a hydrating gel and sunblock. This was probably the smallest my beauty routine looked in a while, but it was the start of what my routine would build into.

After the cooling down period, I started on Laura’s recommended regimen of four products in the range. The idea is to keep it really simple to rebuild the skin’s barrier, keep it hydrated and begin to see where the redness flares the most.

It’s completely clear that the products I was previously using, although were surface-level hydrating, weren’t targeting my real skin issues at all!

The Routine

With a skin condition like rosacea, it was stressful for me to start with the basics. I never believed my skin was ‘sensitive’ but once I started on targeting products - I realised these were doing my skin a world of good. I was over-exfoliating and picking too many products all at once.

Cleanser

The cleanser replaced both my oil and gel cleanser completely. Rather than doing a double cleanse with different products, I would stick to using just one product twice. Having a non-stripping cleanser is crucial to keep the delicate balance of our skin's PH level. I loved that I was taking one product off my shelf to keep things nice and simple.

Soothing Gel

Laura chose this gel to soothe the redness before we targeted it with an active serum. The aloe vera was a perfect anti-inflammatory which calmed the skin to promote the reduction of redness. I hadn’t used a gel serum before - my serums had always been more of a thinner consistency, but having a thicker consistency with a cooling effect was great on slightly irritated skin!

Targeting Serum

The Super B Complex is my absolute go-to serum to combat redness, inflammation and irritation associated with skin conditions like rosacea and sensitivity. It’s super lightweight and lasts a while, which is great when you’re spending more. The serum is packed with niacinamide which boosts collagen and rejuvenates the skin.

Moisturiser

We swapped my moisturiser for asap’s Hydrating Defence SPF50+. It’s packed with all the good stuff: niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, turmeric and powerful antioxidants. Laura chose this one specifically because the Hydrating Defence Moistuiser’s purpose is to even the skin tone, control redness and provide UVA and UVB protection - checking all of my boxes.

The Results

In all honesty, I looked at this skincare journey as a complete experiment. I kept my expectations very low because I didn’t want to be disappointed, but also because I didn’t really believe there was a complete answer.

It took about a month and a half to really see results. I think that’s the important part to stress, that just like working out, you’re not going to magically wake up and see your skin has changed overnight. Because I put in the effort, my skin kept rewarding me.

The redness didn’t disappear evenly, yet it became patchy, which actually really helped! We were able to see where the rosacea was worse, which for me was across my cheekbones and around my chin, to thoroughly target these areas more.

I now sit here a few months down the track, and can’t believe the results I’ve had. Don’t get me wrong, it’s all about consistency so I’ve got a long way to go, but in the space of a few months, asap has completely changed how my skin looks and feels. So much so, that I’m wearing less makeup every day and feeling so much more confident.
