Battle of the Blowouts: ghd vs Shark vs Dyson
BY JENNY JUNG
Wondering which hair tool you actually need? We compare the ghd, Shark and Dyson to find the real winner.

03 NOV - 2025
A hands-on review comparing the three biggest hair tools shaping the blow dry market right now.
Hair tools have come a long way from the days of a simple round brush and a hair dryer. Wet-to-dry technology, heat sensors, digital motors and endless attachments have completely reshaped how we style our hair.
With TikTok tutorials and internet hype all influencing purchasing decisions, consumers are more confused than ever about which tool to invest in. ghd, Shark and Dyson dominate the conversation, but it’s important to know that they aren’t built equally, and they certainly don’t deliver the same finish.
This review breaks down real performance across drying time, smoothness, frizz control, weight, hair health and value. After testing each tool multiple times on medium-thick Asian wavy hair, I can definitely say which tool is my favourite.
Quick Overview
ghd Duet Blow Dry: A wet-to-dry styler powered by the patented Heat-Air Xchange Technology which heats the snag-free bristles and barrel for smoother styling. Built-in sensors monitor temperature 400 times per second to maintain consistent, safe heat levels while delivering efficient wet-to-dry performance.
Shark FlexStyle: Tagged as the “affordable Dyson,” the Flexstyle is a multi-styler known for its various attachments, flexible wand and impressive performance for the price. This is one of the only multi-stylers to also include a diffuser attachment.
Dyson: A pioneer in the air-styling category, Dyson revolutionised the industry with its quiet digital motor and precise airflow that shapes, waves and smooths the hair without the use of extreme heat. The Airwrap’s built-in temperature sensors keep heat below 150°C to minimise damage, ensuring consistent, safe styling. It remains one of the most premium, and priciest, tools on the market.
Performance Comparison
When it comes to drying time, The Dyson was consistently the fastest, taking hair from damp to fully dry quicker than both ghd and Shark. ghd came in at a close second while Shark required the longest drying time on dense or textured hair.
In terms of smoothness and finish, ghd delivered the glossiest, most polished result. I really felt like I got a professional blowout with literally zero frizz. Dyson offers a softer, natural finish, while Shark smooths well for the price but cannot rival ghd’s shine.
For ease of use, ghd wins for its simplicity. Afterall, you don’t need to switch out any of the attachments and its one-step wet-to-dry finish requires almost no technique. Dyson remains the quietest and lightest, making it the most comfortable to hold during longer styling sessions. However, if you are looking for different attachment options, you may want to look towards Dyson and Shark. If you’re like me and you prefer a one and done product, the ghd is perfect.
When it comes to longevity, ghd completely surprised me. I have never had a blow dry stay fully intact overnight the way it did with the Duet. The smoothness, shape and shine were still there the next morning with almost no touch-up needed. As someone who prefers to wash and style my hair the night before (to save time in the mornings), this was the feature that genuinely sold me on the tool. Neither Shark nor Dyson offered the same next-day payoff. They look great on day one, but ghd is the only one that truly lasted.
When looking at hair health, both ghd and Dyson stood out for their intelligent heat control. ghd avoids the crunchy texture common in wet-to-dry tools, and Dyson’s temperature cap protects fine hair. The Shark tends to run hotter and needs more passes to achieve smoothness.

Value
In terms of value, Shark clearly takes the lead. It delivers good performance at a mid-tier price, making it ideal for budget-conscious shoppers or anyone who genuinely needs a multi-styler with lots of attachments. However the price difference between ghd and Shark is actually fairly small. And while Shark offers more attachments, if you only need one core function, choosing quality over quantity makes far more sense.
At the end of the day, you should get the tool that fits your budget and your styling needs. But if you’ve been debating a high-end purchase, I’d recommend choosing ghd over Dyson. Especially if the Dyson appeal is more about virality than performance. ghd simply gives you better, longer-lasting results for the money.

ghd, Duet Blowdry Hair Drier Brush, Cherry Chic Holiday Gift Set $665 NZD.
Final Verdict
Choose the tool that fits your budget and routine, but if you’re looking for the best overall finish and longevity, in my humble opinion, ghd is the one worth investing in.
