A Single Girl's Guide to Surviving Valentine's Day
BY JENNY JUNG
Valentines Day 2023 Is for the single ladies.
27 JAN - 2023
After 24 years of spending V-Day as a single gal, I’ve gotten pretty good at the self-care thing.
As a perpetually single gal who has never been on a Valentine's Day date, I have become highly creative with how I spend this coveted holiday. After all, with each year passing, finding other single friends to celebrate a gal-pal-inspired Valentine's Day becomes more and more challenging.
These days, my obsession with the show Sex and the City has returned with full force. Although the modern woman isn't as fixated on finding a partner as the 90's woman was, there is still a part of me that admires the idea of being in a stable relationship - something I have yet to experience. At the same time, many people quickly tell me that they would rather be single than be in a relationship in their 20’s. On a side note, Sex and the City is bona fide the best guide to navigating this world as a single gal.
I am constantly hearing that I am privileged to be able to worry about myself, care for myself and work on myself. Does that mean you can't do those things if you are in a relationship? Either way, what I do know is that if you are single on Valentine's Day, you are guaranteed to have a good fucking day without anybody ruining it for you. Here’s how to spend V-Day the Carrie Bradshaw way - single and killing it!

Legitimately the Best Sheet Mask Ever
When you don't have anybody to wake up to this February 14th, you can do whatever the hell you like! Start by taking care of your skin. Hydrate, debloat and nourish with legitimately the best sheet mask ever. You'd rather spend $18 on one good treatment than $3 on a stupidly over-scented sheet mask full of alcohol and filler ingredients. Trust me on this one.
Luckily, we can hook you up with the Aspect Dr Intense Hydrating Sheet Mask right here and now. Nurture your skin with a massive dose of Hyaluronic Acid, vitamins B and E, botanical actives and the sheer satisfaction of thriving as a single gal.
Read The Book That is Collecting Dust on Your Bookshelf
While your sheet mask is settling in, you will need an activity to kill some time. Pick up that book you purchased during your identity crisis and commit to it. Are you telling me that you want to commit to a relationship when you cannot even commit to a book?
This Valentines Day, I will be nose deep into The 48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene and Joost Elffers. Riveting, thought-provoking, seductive and awfully Machiavellian - I highly recommend.
Laminate Your Eyebrows at Home
Since I purchased the Brow Code Lustre Lamination Kit, I have been saving hundreds of dollars on getting them professionally done. In fact, I even do them for my friends and family at a discounted price, and I still get a good return on it!
For $130, you get five treatments that last a bloody long time. The instructions are clear and easy to execute. The kit even comes with the mini Brow Gold serum that will keep your brows looking top-notch.
Check out their other kits if you are looking for some other goodies for the brows!
Brow Code Lustre Lamination Kit, $129.90 NZD.
Aromatherapy
As cliche as it sounds, lighting a candle is an absolute self-care must. Call me biassed, but the Neve Candles, available on Chatty Chums, are some of the best candles I own in my collection. The two fragrances that CC has (Wild Pine & Juniper and Whisky & Woodsmoke) are usually out of stock on the Neve website! They’re 20% off at the moment - FWB20 (it means friends with benefits).
Complete with a wooden wick that crackles in the background, the Neve Candles boast an impressive burn time with zero tunnelling. The Wood Pine and Juniper scent is my favourite due to its ultra-creamy, fresh and uplifting scent.
Journal!
This year, I picked up the Subtle Art of Not Giving a #@%! Journal by Mark Manson. It follows the same rhythm as the original book but allows the reader to write and reflect upon the questions raised in this specially guided journal.
Being single on Valentine's Day requires people to simply not give a fuck. It's good to stay emotionally and mentally in tune with yourself. Maybe you don't need a journal to feel that way, but this one is full of other quirks that are interesting, inward-looking and somewhat emotional. Start this journey on Valentine's Day and dedicate your love and loyalty to yourself.
Buy That Thing You’ve Been Wanting But Never Did
Sex and the City Season 6 Episode 9 is a great throwback when you need a little self-validation. The moral of the story goes a little something like this: as single gals, how many gifts do we hand out to the millions of friends who are getting married? Everybody gets a birthday gift, but how many friends have you gifted to celebrate their love while you get... nothing?
Get yourself that thing that you've been holding off on buying. Literally, no one else is going to get it for you. I'm sorry if that was a little too matter-of-fact, but it’s true! Embrace your single status and be your own gift-giver. You won't regret it and will be very proud of yourself.
