A Review of Joy By Dior
BY REBECCA DIEUDONNE
Dior perfumer Francois Demachy explains that the fragrance “expresses joy through the olfactive interpretation of light”.

The new JOY by Dior is an ode to life’s pleasures. It is a scent embodying energy, liveliness and good mood.
Jennifer Lawrence starred in the cinematic short film released the other week. She wears a stunning white tulle dress and is seen dancing underwater, flirting coquettishly at the camera. It’s a playful and luxurious anecdote to accompany the fragrance.
Immediately after spritzing, you are met with soft citrus and powdered notes that mature into musky florals. The fragrance features zested bergamot and mandarin, in addition to grasse rose and jasmine.
The perfume is beautifully soft and non-offensive for everyday wear. It would be suitable for all seasons, but best suited to summer or spring in my opinion. It makes me think of a sunny day spent outside wearing a light dress and sipping on chilled wine. It is well lasting, I spritzed twice at 7am, and I can still smell it hours later.
The fragrance bottle is light pink, with silver metal detailing and a heavy textured cap. The fragrance is available from Farmers and select Department stores at $285 for 90ml EDP. There is also a body lotion to accompany the fragrance to layer and increase the longevity of the scent.
The film for JOY by Dior perfectly encapsulates the feelings evoked when you spritz the fragrance. Directed by Francis Lawrence, the film is a compilation of the outstandingly beautiful Jennifer Lawrence living and breathing her best life as an A-star actress. Adorned in jewels and haute couture, J.Law immerses herself in all the sensories that bring her Joie de Vivre. She moves fluidly and effortlessly throughout the film; smiling, laughing, swimming, kissing… Every scene is created to exude an uplifting feeling; a feeling that, arguably, is desired universally by everyone.
Francis Lawrence made his name by creating a stream of music videos for pop queens and kings, the likes of Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Shakira, Justin Timberlake, P!nk, Janet Jackson and Britney Spears. He then directed I AM LEGEND, Water For Elephants and the last three films from The Hunger Games saga; Catching Fire and Mockingjay Part I & II; in which he formed a long-term collaboration relationship with Jennifer Lawrence. The latest blockbuster by the two Lawrences was Red Sparrow. The bond is visible in the perfectly harmonized film that shows life’s simple pleasures, albeit in a hedonistic environment.
The sensorial experience of JOY by Dior is an all-encompassing olfactory moment in which fresh, heady, floral and milky notes are combined into one. The perfumer’s intention was to provide the concept of plenitude. Bergamot and mandarin notes are used to make the rose and jasmine soar. The middle notes of smooth and milky sandalwood, cedar and patchouli are embraced in an instant. The musky base is soft, intimate and light - making for a perfume that’s natural yet evokes a glamorous femininity.
A New Dior
It’s been 20 years since Dior launched a new women’s perfume line. Conforming to Dior’s embodiment of happiness, JOY by Dior is an olfactive interpretation of the intangible and abstract word itself.
François Demachy, Dior Perfumer-Creator, said, "Bringing a new Dior perfume to life is an event. For the entire house as much as for myself. It should rally and delight both men and women. It should have a far-reaching and generous dimension, with a strong signature. I was fortunate to know its name from the beginning. And what a name! Short, and lively yet not affected, it is open to all possibilities. To tell its story, I chose to create an enveloping scent, marked by softness as well as by energy. JOY by Dior is a breath of air, a path one travels, which carries you away."
JOY by Dior RRPS are as follows: 30ml, $99 AUD / $115 NZD*; 50ml, $165 AUD / $195 NZD*; 90ml, $240 AUD / $285 NZD*.
