From the girl next door vibe to head-turning drama, choose what most echoes the ‘tude of the day.
Winter is my favourite time to upgrade my makeup game. Not only does it open up the door to a whole new range of moods to don but it also means I don’t have to deal with the summer sweat. Lipstick is an integral part of my wardrobe, and you best believe that the colour I wear on my lips has been carefully coordinated with the outfit of the day. Here are a few tips to optimise the lip-drobe this winter season.
Re-visiting the Classic: The Vampy Lip
When we think about the winter aesthetic, the resident makeup look is the vampy lip and contour. She won't be going anywhere, but it's not everyone's cup of tea. There are several renditions of this classic look, and it will be the first I will address today.
The lip-focused makeup look is ideal because if you're anything like me, you value your sleep - especially when it's icy cold in the morning. Minimal eye makeup and a simple base paired with a bold lip creates a powerful statement with little effort required. Today, lipstick is fighting a constant battle with masks and that’s okay as vampy lips pair perfectly well with a smokey eye or dramatic wing liner too!
It is important to consider your undertone as there are so many vampy lip colours. If you are warm-toned, try something that leans on the red side. On the other hand, cooler-toned guys and gals should try colours that have blue or violet undertones. And if you're neutral-toned, well, consider yourself blessed with the best of both worlds. Keep in mind, these are only guidelines at the end of the day, so I highly encourage you all to experiment with the color wheel to find the best fit for you!
My favourite universal cool girl, vampy lip, has to be M.A.C Rebel. Like the name suggests, it isn't your typical "every day” MLBB (my lips but better). Instead, it radiates confidence and boldness. I love recommending this to people as most of us will probably already own a deep red or purple. M.A.C. Rebel is a mid-toned purple with a unique pink undertone. I guarantee you won't already have anything like it.
Bold but Wearable
If the boysenberry rebel baddie isn't for you, try her more elegant and poised sister: burnt red. The new NARS Air Matte Lip Colour in ‘Pin Up’ is a rich, brick red that is begging for your attention. Air Matte is not your average liquid lipstick, it is an elevated winter-approved formula that is satin matte, long-lasting, and non-drying.
Burnt reds with terracotta undertones are usually whipped out at the first sign of autumn. It gives a laid back and utilitarian vibe; quintessential for those who love vintage styles with beige and brown colour palettes in their wardrobe.
Gloss is Boss
When I think of winter, I imagine serene landscapes covered in smooth, powdery snow twinkling during golden hour. The go-to method to emulate this is with lip gloss. Pair it with a shimmery eye look and flushed cheeks for that effortless and cute winter look.
If you're looking for a low-maintenance option, lip gloss has your back! The Dior Addict Stellar Gloss is perfect for a no-drama, effortless look that provides a stunning range of winter shades. Pale pinks, nudes, mauves, and reds all make a feature in this line, so you'll be sure to find your favourite lip gloss with just the right amount of shimmer.

Did Somebody Say Haute Chocolate?
The 90’s trend has brought back browns in a big way. It’s a hard one to choose and can be a hit or miss but we’ve got the it-shade - Laura Mercier Rouge Essentiel Silky Creme Lipstick in Brun Naturel - a divine, buildable brown that’s not too mahogany nor too umber. It’s the Goldilocks approved Haute chocolate brown that is a must for your hot girl winter antics. If you have a deeper skin tone, try Chocolate Divin from the same range!
If you love monochromatic makeup, apply it on the lips and cheeks and pair it with a soft chocolate eye to create a sexy, smouldering look.
Winter is the perfect time to adorn your lips with a refreshing splash of cranberry.
The Westman Atelier Squeaky Clean Liquid Lip Balm is formulated with organic jojoba, almond and argan oil which makes it ideal for the drier season. Although it comes in a range of colours, allow me to direct your attention to the shade 'Pipsqueak.' It has a berry undertone with a hint of warmth that is by far the most uncomplicated option in my winter lip repertoire. It has quickly become a vital component of the handbag, and a necessary step in the touch-up routine.
There you have it - an in-depth exploration into a few different formulas and some new colour inspiration. Lipstick is a known mood enhancer so whenever you need a wee pick me up, swipe it on to set your scene.
