Blur the line between makeup and skincare with the latest from Too Faced. As a skincare addict, this was the perfect solution for my makeup needs.

The cult-favourite Too Faced foundation has got a major matte update.

You’ll never catch me in a foundation that looks like I’m wearing foundation. When it comes to my makeup priorities, foundation and eyebrows are both first equal. Find me on a desert island with my designated three things; a cleanser, foundation and my eyebrow pencil.

There are those who love to don a full coverage face, and others *raises hand* who prefer a pared back, natural look. Personally, I’m the latter. For me, a flawless foundation finish always starts with your canvas a.k.a your skin, so I’m always on the look out for a buildable foundation where I can choose my coverage while maintaining a natural, flawless skin finish. The latest Too Faced Born This Way Matte 24 Hour Undetectable Super Longwear Foundation was crafted for just that.

For those who aren’t up to speed, Too Faced Born This Way Foundation first hit the shelves in 2015 and quickly became a cult favourite for its dewy finish. After worldwide requests, the brand decided to expand the range, resulting in this badass oil-free foundation. Just like the OG formula, Born This Way Matte features skin loving ingredients like alpine rose, coconut water and hyaluronic acid to hydrate and smooth the skin.

What Too Faced promises: An oil-free foundation that masterfully diffuses the line between makeup and skin for the perfect naturally flawless matte finish and undetectable coverage. It’s medium-to-full coverage and oil free. It’s available in 35 shades and includes coconut water to replenish skin’s moisture levels, alpine rose to empower skin health and resilience and hyaluronic acid to give skin a smoother, more youthful appearance.

One of my best friends, who happens to be a MUA, swears by Too Faced and now uses the Matte Foundation on all her clients, so I thought I’d trust her judgement and give it a go.

The Application

I always start my makeup routine off with freshly cleansed and moisturised skin. I skipped on primer - I’ve tried a few but never really got the hype when it came to my own skin. Of course, I used my trusted beauty blender to get the job done. However, due to the trio of skincare ingredients, the formulation is extremely pliable, so you could easily use your fingers!

As soon as I started, I couldn’t believe how easily it applied - no streaks to be seen! Usually, I’ll spend a while applying to ensure the foundation is completely blended and smoothed out but with Too Faced, that time was almost cut in half.

Starting in the centre of my face, I blended outwards so that I achieve the right coverage in the right areas - medium coverage around my eyes and nose, but a lighter coverage on my forehead and cheeks where I feel I have the best skin.

When this foundation said it was buildable, it wasn’t lying. I even skipped out on concealer because I honestly felt like I didn’t need it. Because it’s so buildable, this foundation would work well for spot coverage as well.

It was full coverage where I needed it to be and medium coverage where I wanted to have a more natural skin finish. It looked like my real skin, but better, removing my usual oily shine, for a flawless matte finish.

Wearability

I only set my T-zone with a translucent powder and left the rest of the foundation as it is. Due to the matte finish, I wanted to ensure the slightly oily parts of my face wouldn't shine through. From here, I could control where I wanted a little glow with a touch of highlighter.

The formula is more of a natural matte, rather than a dry flat matte, which is great for people like me who usually opt for a glowly, light formulation. Think of it as dipping your toe into the matte sphere of foundations!

From a ‘normal’ skin perspective, I was happy with the coverage it gave me throughout the day. There was no need for a full touch up leading into a night out. I always set my face with a little more powder on nights out taking into account flash photography and hot indoor bars etc. and this made a world of difference to its durability.

"The formula is more of a natural matte, rather than a dry flat matte, which is great for people like me who usually opt for a glowy, light formulation."

Final Verdict

If you’re looking for a buildable medium to full coverage natural-finish foundation, then this definitely for you. The formulation isn’t something I’d personally wear daily, as I usually opt for light to medium coverage for day to day wear, but I think Too Faced Matte is now going to become a regular for events and a night out.

The fact that the foundation can be applied with anything from fingers to professional brushes, means this foundation really is for everyone, regardless of how advanced your makeup skills are.
